4 Chesterfield Gardens

Mayfair, London

Built in 1870, from about 1913 this was the home of the widowed American socialite Mrs Cornelia (Sherman) Martin (1843-1920). Her daughter, the Countess of Craven, lived next door at No. 3 (since demolished, its replacement can be seen on the right in the photo) and had the interior walls knocked through to connect up with her mother. Today, the mansion is the Egyptian Cultural Institute.
