Beaufort Castle
Beauly, Inverness-shire
Built 1880, for Simon Fraser (1828-1887), 13th Lord Lovat. The castle represents the ancestral seat of Clan Fraser of Lovat and replaced two earlier castles built on the same site, the earliest dating to the 12th century. In 1994, it was regretfully sold by the 15th Lord Lovat to meet inheritance taxes, though he has vowed to buy it back.
