Faulkbourne Hall

Faulkbourne Hall, Witham, Essex

Built from circa 1426 when it was acquired by Sir John Montgomery, a Welsh knight who served in France under the Duke of York. Built around three sides of a courtyard, he faced the timber-framed house with red brick and received a licence to have it crenellated in 1439. Inherited by a marriage to the Montgomerys, Faulkbourne came into the possession of the Fortescue family. In 1637, John Fortescue sold Faulkbourne to Sir Edward Bullock (1580-1644) Kt., of Loftes. His son, Edward, made several substantial additions notably from 1650, and Edward's grandson, Sir Edward Bullock M.P., added significantly to the family coffers on his marriage to Mary, daughter of Sir Josiah Child, Governor of the East India Company. Further extensions were made in the 19th century financed by the Bullocks interests in the Hamburg trade. In 1865, it was leased to an American, Henry Maunsell Bradhurst, whose son took up residence at Rivenhall Place....

Three years after Bradhurst died (1897) the Bullock family sold Faulkbourne to Andrew Motion, the son of a Scottish baker who became a brewer and pub-owner and shortly afterwards flipped it on to an estate agent, Christopher William Oxley Parker (1853-1929), whose son, Charles, co-founded the estate agents Strutt & Parker in 1885. It later passed to Christopher Parker's grandson of the same name, Christopher Parker (1920-2009).
