Millard Fillmore House

Niagara Square, Buffalo, New York

Built in 1852, for John Hollister who was forced to sell just six years later due to a downturn in business. It was purchased that year (1858) by U.S. President Millard Fillmore and his second wife, Caroline (Carmichael) McIntosh. Fillmore died here in 1874 at which point this sons merged the house with the former M.S. Hawley home next door to become the "Hotel Fillmore". In 1901, in preparation for the Pan-American Exposition, the hotel was renovtaed and renamed the Castle Inn. In 1923, it was replaced by the Statler Hotel that still stands in its place today.
