Oaklands

Oaklands Farm Road, Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine

Completed in 1836, for Robert Hallowell Gardiner (1782-1864) and his wife, Emma Jane Tudor (1785-1865). It was designed by the architect Richard Upjohn and stood an estate of several hundred acres first cleared by Robert's grandfather, Dr. Silvester Gardiner. It was built with stone to avoid the fate of the original (1810) house - "an ample wooden house with classic porch and pillars" - that burned down in 1835.
