Oakwood

Built in 1876, for Samuel Gray Ward (1817-1907) and his wife, Anna Hazard Barker (1813-1900). During the 1840s, the Wards had lived year-round at "Highwood" in Lenox before he took over his father's banking firm in Boston. Having summered for 10-years at Land's End in Newport (which later gained notoriety when bought by Edith Wharton) the Wards sold up and commissioned Charles McKim of the infamous triumvirate of McKim, Mead & White to build "Oakwood" back at Lenox. In 1891, they sold Oakwood to the hugely wealthy Anson Phelps Stokes, of New York, who converted it into stables on building Shadow Brook further up the hill. Oakwood was lost to fire in 1903.
