Royal Society of Arts House
8 John Adam Street, London WC2
Completed in 1774, as the new home of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). It was designed by James and Robert Adam as part of their innovative "Adelphi Scheme". The house is noted for the Great Room which features a magnificent sequence of paintings by the Irish artist James Barry entitled "The Progress of Human Knowledge and Culture". The house inspired the Joseph Coolidge House, the first Neo-classical house in Boston, Massachusetts, designed in 1792 by Charles Bulfinch.
