He was educated in England and at St. John's College, Annapolis. He succeeded to Belair on his father's death in 1809. He did not enter politics, but he held several several offices by appointment. He is remembered as, "a well-read, humorous, and most estimable gentleman". He married Anna Maria Cooke on February 25, 1796, and they were survived by thirteen children (listed above).
