He was born at "Fairfield" Virginia and was educated at William & Mary College. He served as a Member of the House of Burgesses (1745-1753) and between 1749 and 1755 spared no expense on building his plantation home at Williamsburg, Carter's Grove. In 1737, he married Lucy, "a very agreeable young lady," daughter of John Grymes of "Brandon" Middlesex Co., Virginia, a Member of the King's Council. According to the family records published here by Colonial Williamsburg, they were the parents of nine children, of whom the four listed above certainly lived to adulthood.
