Charles Grant (d.1784)

He was the son of James Grant, and grandson of Donald Grant of Glenbeg. In 1768, he established himself in business at Quebec. In 1776, with James Johnston and Robert Lester, he co-founded the Quebec Chamber of Commerce along the lines of that in New York which circumnavigated the pre-existing and restrictive French laws. He introduced his friend/distant cousin, Robert Grant (co-founder of the North West Company with Simon McTavish etc.) to the fur trade who having made his fortune returned to Scotland and purchased the Kincorth estate. Robert's daughter, Davina, married Charles' son, Frederick. After Charles died his widow remarried his business partner, John Blackwood. He was the grandfather of William Forsyth-Grant, of Ecclegreig.
