Charles Waterhouse Goodyear (1846-1911)

He became a prominent lawyer at Buffalo but gave up his practice to enter into the lumber business with his brother, Frank. They owned thousands of acres of timber land in Potter County, Pennsylvania, and were considered to be the largest hemlock growers in the world. They built their own railroads and mills and had the capacity to process 400,000-feet of lumber a day. After establishing the Goodyear Lumber Co. they were responsible for producing many millions of lumber and several million tons of bituminous coal a year. In 1876, he married Ella, daughter of Anson G. Conger, and they were the parents of four children. After his death, Ella established the Charles W. Goodyear Fund at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
