He was born in the CĂ©vennes in south-central France, the son of Charles and Margaret Rebotier. His family, "most zealously adopted the Reformation" (ie., became Protestants) and were counted among the 'Noblesse' of the region. He came to London as a merchant, and in 1752 his success allowed him to buy Greensted Hall in Essex. He married Margaret (surname unknown) and had several children.
