Edward Collis Hopkins (1857-1941)

Edward C. Hopkins, Architect, President of the Alberta Association of Architects

He was born in Montreal, son of the city's pre-eminent architect of his era. Edward also trained as an architect in his father's offices before forming a partnership with him in 1876. After his father retired, he worked in Boston (1894 to 1896) and then Quebec City (1896 to 1904) with George Tanguay. After his father died, he moved to Calgary and became associated with William Dodd but within the year left for Edmonton on his appointment as Provincial Architect for Alberta. He resigned the following year (1907) and became a partner in Magoon, Hopkins & James; Hopkins & James; and, Hopkins & Wright. He then practised by himself, specialising in the design of large commercial and industrial warehouse buildings. He was elected President of the Alberta Association of Architects in 1910, and seems to have retired sometime after 1920. He died in Edmonton. He married Emma Blow and had two sons and a daughter.
