He was born at Baltimore, Maryland. He did not engage in business but lived comfortably on his father's plantation near Louisville, Kentucky. He married Matilda, daughter of Captain Benjamin Lockwood and stepdaughter of Captain John Cleves Symmes Jr., who achieved fame as a scientist for his Hollow Earth Theory.
