He was born in Niles, Michigan. He attended the University of Minnesota and in 1882 entered the milling business with his father at Minneapolis. He soon turned his attention to railroads and became general freight and passenger agent for the Northern Pacific and then general agent for the Wisconsin Central in Minneapolis and St. Paul. After 1890, he re-entered the milling business and it was as manager of the foreign department of the Ogilvie Flour Mills that he came to Montreal. There, he became President of the Abitibi Power & Paper Company and did much to improve the town of Iroquois Falls in Ontario. He was an ardent motorist and was President of the Automobile Club of Canada in 1910. He lived at 27 Rosemount Avenue in Westmount before 1922 when he bought the J.K.L. House in Montreal, but died the following year. He was survived by his wife, Anna M. McAvoy, of Buckhannon, West Virginia, and a daughter, Martha.
