Gabriel Manigault (1809-1888)

Col. Gabriel Manigault, Confederate Officer, retired to London, Ontario

He was born at Charleston, South Carolina, and practiced law in Alabama. He signed the Ordinance of Secession and was appointed aide to Francis Wilkinson Perkins, Governor of South Carolina, serving in the ordinance department with the rank of Colonel. During the Civil War, he was in command of troops on the South Santee and by the end of the war he was serving in the recruitment office. Several years later, he moved with his family and his wife's uncle, Alexander Mazyk, to London, Ontario. From there in retirement, he published several novels and other works including "The United States Unmasked" (1879). In 1846, he married Anne, daughter of Dr. Philip Porcher Mazyck of Charleston, and they had 4-children who all remained in Canada.
