George Browne (1811-1885)
George William Richardson Browne, Architect & Developer, of Montreal
He was born into a prominent landed family in Northern Ireland, son of George Browne, an architect, by a daughter of William Richardson Goodlatte, High Sheriff of County Tyrone (1807). He was a cousin of Thomas Richardson Browne (1810-1882) J.P., D.L., who built Aughentaine Castle. George emigrated to Quebec City where he initially practised with his brother, Goodlatte Richardson Browne (1813-1855). He is best remembered for the public buildings he built at Kingston, Ontario (notably the Kingston City Hall) under the patronage of John Solomon Cartwright for whom he built Rockwood. By his wife, Anna Maria Sophia Jameson, he had 5-children.
