His father had hoped he would become a priest, sending him to the well-known Catholic boarding school in England, Stonyhurst College, along with his own personal valet. Returning to the States, he later renounced his faith to marry his socialite wife, "Loulie". He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and set up one of the first investment banks in the Midwest, G. H. Walker & Co. In 1919, he partnered with Averell Harriman and founded W.A. Harriman & Co., on Wall Street, New York. In 1922, he sponsored the first Walker Golf Tournament that continues today.
