He was perhaps related to the architect William E. Smith who was born in Cleveland in 1821 and, "constructed several of the most prominent buildings in that place". In 1879, George went into practice in Ohio with Lucas Allen Heard, forming Heard & Smith. In the early 1880s they designed two mansions on Cleveland's Euclid Avenue (Andrews Folly and the Brush Mansion) and in 1890 he collaborated with John Eisenmann in designing the building for which he is best known, Cleveland's Arcade. He built the Lakeside Hospital as well as several corporate buildings one of which is now the Cleveland Public Library. In the early 1870s he married Ruhamah Henkle and they were parents of four children. He retired in 1918 and died at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
