He grew up in Pennsylvania where his father was known as the "Iron King". In 1834, he settled in Cincinnati to open up a new arm of the family business and subsequently made a fortune of his own principally through the increase in demand for iron and steel during the Civil War. He initially lived at 311 Broadway before building his 51-room castle at Clifton, Scarlet Oaks, from 1867. By his first wife, he was the father of nine children, five of whom lived to adulthood: his sons William and Peter, and daughters Mrs Fitzhugh, Mrs Chambliss & Mrs Sherlock.
