He was born in Edinburgh to the John Haig & Co. Whisky family. His younger brother was Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, who commanded the British Army on the Western Front in the First World War. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1896, he married the American divorcée, Mrs Charlotte (Astor) Drayton. They lived in London at 65 Brook Street off Grosvenor Square, without children. He died just nine years later and she lived the remainder of her life in Paris.
