He was born at Mobile, Alabama. He was graduated in law (1878) from Columbia College in New York and subsequently became a lawyer and the first Persian Consul-General at New York. He was heir to his father's $8-million fortune and in 1884 married Florence Matthews, an illegitimate daughter and co-heiress of Isaac Singer. They lived at 21 West 39th Street in Manhattan and kept Arleigh in Newport. From the mid-90's they lived in France as prominent members of the American Colony. They died without children.
