Herbert Payson (1860-1940)

of 71 Bowdoin Street, Portland, Maine; Partner in H.M. Payson & Co.

He joined H.M. Payson & Co., founded by his uncle in 1854, and worked closely with his elder brother, Charles Henry Payson, who co-founded the American Water Works, the Guarantee Company Ltd. (1886), and the American Water Supply Company (1888). He built the red brick mansion that still stands at 71 Bowdoin Street, Portland, and was the father-in-law of Joan (Whitney) Payson, the extremely wealthy, philanthropic, and charismatic first President of the New York Mets.
