Isaac Gouverneur (1673-1728)

He was born at Amsterdam, Holland, descended from a French Huguenot family. He came to America with his brother (Abram, Speak of the New York Assembly) as merchants trading in the West Indies, notably the Dutch Caribbean Island of Curacao. Their connection to the island was maintained through Isaac's grandsons, the senior partners of Gouverneur & Kemble at New York. Isaac married Sarah, daughter of Dr Samuel Staats, and they had six children (listed above) who reached adulthood including Sarah, wife of Lewis Morris, Speaker of the New York General Assembly.
