Jacob Lorillard (1774-1838)

He was born in New York City, a younger son of the founder of Lorillard Tobacco. He made his own fortune as a leather merchant, operating his own tannery in the area then known as "the Swamp" where all the leather business in New York City was conducted. He later went into business with his brothers manufacturing tobacco. He was a director of several companies and President of the Mechanic's Bank. He married Anna Kunze and they were the parents of ten children including: Emily, Mrs Lewis Gouverneur Morris; and, Julia, Mrs Daniel McC. Edgar. In 1842, his widow's fortune was estimated at $1.5-million.
