James McVickar (1709-1801)

He was the youngest and longest-living of the three sons of Archibald McVickar. He became a merchant at Larne, Co. Antrim, and owned four ships (Antrim, Jane & Isabella, Lord Templeton, and James & Mary). He sent passengers from Ireland to America, bringing back flaxseed, flour, rum, sugar, potash, etc. He also imported pine boards from Norway, iron from Gothenburg, and flaxseed from Rotterdam. It is assumed that he retired to the house and 25-acre farm at Bloomfield outside Belfast in about 1786. His son, John, became one of New York's most eminent merchants.
