James Robb (1814-1881)

Banker, Utilities & Railroad President, of New Orleans, Louisiana

He was born in Virginia and moved to New Orleans in 1847 where he became President of the Bank of James Robb; President of the New Orleans Gas Light & Banking Company; and, President of the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad. He amassed a valuable collection of European and American art, much of which was sold in 1859 and some of which is now in the collection of New Orleans Museum of Art. He marred Louise Werninger and was the father of J. Hampden Robb. They lived at the grand Italianate Robb Mansion in the Garden District (see images).
