John Clinton Ogilvie (1838-1900)

He was born in New York City and studied art under James M. Hart who favored the Düsseldorf style of painting. He became well-known as a landscape artist. He often travelled to Paris where he kept a studio and between 1879 and 1883 he lived in Europe, predominantly between Paris, Nice and Menton during which time he became known for his French and Swiss scenes. He exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic. His landscapes of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Boston Athenaeum. He was an associate member of the National Academy of Design since 1864. He died at the Sherman Square Hotel at Broadway and 71st Street and was survived by his wife and their rather remarkable daughter, the geologist Ida H. Ogivie.
