John Craig (1754-1807)

Spanish Merchant, of Philadelphia & "Andalusia" Bucks Co., Pennsylvania

He was the son of Scottish parents and went into business with his father at Philadelphia. He and his business partner, Robert Oliver, were among only a handful of American merchants who received a commercial monopoly to trade with the colonies of Spanish America, freeing them from the payment of excessive import duties. He was also in partnership with his brother-in-law, the Portuguese merchant Francis Cabellero Sarmentio, the U.S. Commercial Agent of Manuel Espinosa, Director of the Caja de Consolidacion. Having made his fortune, he established "Andalusia" in Bucks County in 1795 that passed to his distinguished son-in-law, Nicholas Biddle.
