He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the only child of his parents. In 1802, he married Mary Babcock and from 1809 they made their home at 8 Park Street on Boston's Beacon Hill. He died just eight years later. He left his widow, "my Mansion House on Park Street" and all his furniture, library, horses and carriages, plus $20,000 and an annuity of $6,000 a year for the rest of her life. He left his two children $30,000 each and to his uncles (Christoper Gore of Gore Place and the painter, Samuel Gore) he gave $10,000 each. His son, John, grew up to be a landscape artist and portraitist of some renown, and his daughter married the celebrated sculptor Horatio Greenough.
