John Izard Middleton (1785-1849)
J.I. "Izard" Middleton, Archeologist & Artist, of Charleston, S.C.
He is recognized as "the first American classical archeologist". From 1816, he and wife lived permanently between France and Italy, Izard having sold all his property in Carolina to his elder brother, Henry. Two of his watercolors painted in Italy are on display at Middleton Place.
