He was born at New York and joined his Scottish-born father's mercantile company which became known as J & H Auchincloss or Auchincloss Brothers. The firm rose to prominence as the agents for Coats' spool thread which they imported and sold in vast quantities. They also manufactured thread in New York and were well-known in the mercantile community. He was a director of the Merchant's Bank and a trustee of the Equitable Life Assurance Society. When he died in Quebec, his was the oldest dry goods merchants in New York City in continuous management. He married Elizabeth Buck and they were survived by six sons and two daughters. They lived in Manhattan at 11 West 57th Street, and kept a cottage at Newport, Rhode Island.
