John Lewis (1747-1825)

Capt. John Lewis, of "Elmwood" Logan County, Kentucky

He was born in Virginia and graduated from Oxford University in England. He fought in the Revolution and was a partner in his father's gunpowder manufacturing firm. He inherited property in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County. From 1811, he moved to Logan County, Kentucky, where he owned a large amount of land. His first wife was Lucy, daughter of Colonel John and Mildred (Gregory) Thornton. His fifth wife was Mildred, daughter of Landon Thornton Carter of Cleve.
