John M. Pendleton (1835-1900)

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied civil engineering and followed that profession for several years before becoming a wool merchant in New York City and dealing in real estate on Staten Island. He was a co-founder and President of the New York Electrical Society; a Member of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce; and, a member of the Staten Island Club of St. George. He was a Republican and was closely involved in the progress of the public schools on Staten Island. He owned much property on Staten Island and built Bay Villa. He also owned the Hampton House (191 Blackstone) in Boston and had a large orange grove in Florida. In 1862, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Conklin; and, in 1884, he married Jane, daughter of Archibald Forbes. He died at his home on Franklin Avenue, Staten Island, survived by his widow and two sons.
