He was born at Brooklyn, Connecticut. He was the brother of Commodore Amasa Paine and the great-uncle of Mrs C.J. Bonaparte, of Baltimore. He served in the War of 1812 before returning home where he worked in his uncle's store at Brooklyn. He eventually started up a business on his own account and moved to Providence and Philadelphia before settling in New York in 1836. He was a prominent broker and in his later years invested successfully in considerable stock and real estate. He lived between 3 West 53rd Street in Manhattan and built Sea Verge where he summered in Newport. In 1818, he married Mary, daughter of Captain William Harris by whom he had his only child, a son who settled in Paris. In 1856, he was married at Boston to his first cousin, Caroline Paine, daughter of Judge Elijah Paine, U.S. Senator from Vermont.
