John Redman (1730-1798)

He lived between London and Greensted Hall near Ongar in Essex that he purchased in 1771. He was the grandson of two Naval Captains: one developed Redman's Row at Mile End and the other lived at Upminster Hall. He was an active member of the community in London: In 1765, he was appointed Annual Governor of Small Pox Hospitals; Steward at the Annual Feast of Aldersgate Street Lying-In Hospital; Member of the Committee for Relieving Distresses of American Prisoners of War (1777); Member of the Committee of the Revolution Society (1789); Signatory of Friends of Freedom and a Member of the Committee of the Revolution Society Dinner (1792); and, a Member of the Committee of the Friends to Liberty of the Press (1793). In 1763, he married Mary Smith of Trimdon, Co. Durham, who died in childbirth leaving one daughter, Mrs Mary Smith Ord. Having spent the greater part of his life in Mile End, sometime after the 1760s he moved to 62 Hatton Garden where he died. He left an entertaining will.
