Chambly

He was born at Chambly, Quebec and named for his uncle, John Yule (1770-1851). His mother purchased the Seigneury de Chambly-Ouest and Chambly-Est and another fief which she passed to him, making him a significant landowner. He continued his father's business operating flour, timber and grist and saw mills in the area. He supplied the British garrison at Chambly with timber and general supplies and was also involved with shipping, railroads, and manufacturing. In politics, he represented Chambly in the Legislative Council of Quebec (resigning in 1843) and was Mayor of Chambly from 1849 to 1872. He founded what is today the City of Richelieu and built the bridge that connected it to Chambly. His first wife, Elizabeth Hatt, died in 1850. In 1856, he married his second wife, Elizabeth Elliott. From 1845 to 1868 he was the last Seigneur of Chambly and lived at Chambly Castle. He died in Montreal, leaving at least one son.
