Josiah Hornblower Gautier (1818-1895)

He initially followed family tradition by becoming a physician, graduating from the University of New York where from 1844 he was a member of the Department of Medicine. He practiced for some years in Jersey City "attaining high rank" before retiring (1853) in favor of entering into business with Joseph Dixon and his crucible works in Jersey City. He then became interested in the steel works there and as a manufacturer was the senior partner of J.H. Gautier & Co., and Gautier, Parker & Co., New York City. Sometime after his marriage in 1844, he purchased 32 Fifth Avenue, the first house to exhibit the Second Empire Style in America. He was a co-founder of the Huguenot Society being a descendant of Jacques Gautier who came to America in 1716. Dr Gautier married Mary, the daughter of Dudley Sanford Gregory, U.S. Congressman, millionaire, and the first Mayor of Jersey City. Mrs Gautier's sister, Anna, also lived on Fifth Avenue and at Hyde Hall, Cooperstown. They were the parents of seven children.
