He born at Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from Harvard (1822). At a young age while still in his native Louisville, Kentucky, he found himself a widower a with a son. On meeting his second wife, Catherine Longworth, daughter of Cincinnati's first millionaire, and "being an anti-slave man" he was happy to move across the river to Cincinnati in 1835 where they later built a new home "under the wing of Belmont" - Catherine's childhood home.
