He was born at Watertown, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1722. Two years later, he arrived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to both take charge of a school and pursue his legal studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1731 and in doing so became Portsmouth's first legally-trained lawyer. He enjoyed an extensive practice across Maine as well as New Hampshire. Governor Belcher appointed him Attorney-General of New Hampshire and King's Advocate in the Admiralty Court. His final appointed was to Judge of the Superior Court of New Hampshire.
