He was the son of Ezra Thomas Ingalls and Louise Mayberry, farmers, of Harrison, Maine. He was educated at Harvard and became a Senator for Massachusetts and President of the "Big Four" Railroad. His youngest son, Albert, married Jane Taft, niece of U.S. President William Howard Taft.
