Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

Nathaniel Hawthorne, of Concord; Novelist and Transcendentalist

He was born at Salem, Massachusetts. He became known for his stories about sin, guilt and witchcraft in Puritan New England. He is revered for his 1837 short story collection, Twice-Told Tales; his 1850 masterpiece The Scarlet Letter; and the 1851 classic The House of the Seven Gables. He married Sophia, daughter of Dr. Joseph Peabody and they had three children (listed), two of whom survived to adulthood.
