He was born in Virginia and was aide-de-camp to General Nathaniel Greene during the Revolutionary War. He was a Judge and then Attorney-General of Georgia. On marrying his wife he moved to Hyde Park in New York where he was the Judge of Dutchess County and built "Placentia". In 1804, he was Alexander Hamilton's second in the famous duel with Aaron Burr. He had five children.
