Nathaniel Philips (1693-1776)

Nathaniel Philips, Cotton Manufacturer, of Checkley Hall, near Manchester

He grew up at Heath House, Staffordshire, which his father purchased in about 1690. He and his brother John (who succeeded to Heath House) operated the New Tean Hall Mill, a linen and tape weaving factory in Checkley. Together they established the firm of J & N Philips, of Manchester, which became the largest manufacturers of pure linen tape in England and continued to do business up until 1970.
