He was born in Boston and was educated at Harvard and Trinity College, Cambridge, in England. He continued his legal studies at the Inner Temple, London, until his marriage, at which point he became a country gentleman of leisure. He rode to hounds, was an excellent shot, and enjoyed nothing more than a day at the cricket. When he he became too large to ride, he took up golf. Having joined the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew's in Scotland he took to passing his summers there. Despite being all but British, he never renounced his American citizenship. In 1887, he married Frances Henrietta Garnett Gandy, daughter of Captain Henry Gandy J.P., D.L., of Skirsgill Park, Penrith. They were the parents of two sons and a daughter.
