Pierre Lorillard II (1764-1843)

Pierre/Peter Abraham Lorillard Jr., of the Lorillard Tobacco Co., New York

He was not the first American millionaire, but in his obituary in 1843 he was the first American to be termed a "millionaire". The diarist Philip Hone wrote of him: "He was a tobacconist, and his memory will be preserved in the annals of New York by the celebrity of 'Lorillard's Snuff & Tobacco'. He led people by the nose for the best part of a century, and made his enormous fortune by giving them that to chew which they could not swallow". He married Maria, daughter of Major Schultz, and they had five children (listed).
