He was a prominent figure in society and on the turf both in America and abroad. He was the first American to have a horse win the prestigious English Derby and he took part in the first transoceanic yacht race, losing to Gordon Bennett. He was a co-founder of Tuxedo Park and lived between there, 8 Washington Square in New York, and Newport. He married Emily, daughter of Dr. Isaac Taylor of New York and they were the parents of four children (listed).
