Richard Shippen (1795-1868)

of "Green Bank" Burlington Co., New Jersey

He was born at White Marsh, Upper Merion Township in Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. When still a boy, he was sent to India and China and succeeded to the command of an East Indiaman. He followed the sea for some fifteen years and made a name for himself as a navigator. On his marriage in 1825, he quit the sea and settled at "Singletree" near Trenton, New Jersey. For 40-years from its the inception he worked for the Camden & Amboy Railroad during which time he lived in Bordentown and Philadelphia, retiring to "Green Bank" Burlington Co., New Jersey. His first wife was the only daughter of Lawrence Farmer of White Marsh and was the mother of his three surviving children (listed). After her death, he married Catherine, daughter of Francis Binney of Philadelphia.
