He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Yale (1935) and Yale Law School (1938). He became executive Vice-President of the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation until 1963 when he was appointed Secretary to the U.S. Air Force. He was married twice: (1) Olive, daughter of Sumner Sewall, Governor of Maine (2) Oatsie, one of the last grande dames of Newport and grand-daughter of the Governor of Alabama.
