Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave near Banbury

He was born at Sulgrave Manor. In 1601 - the same year in which he bore a son by his second marriage - he surrendered the Manor of Sulgrave as well as the patronage of the neighboring rectory of Stuchbury to his eldest son by his first marriage, Lawrence, presumably in order to protect his rights. However although the Manor of Sulgrave then totalled over a thousand acres, by 1610 it had been diminished to just 7-acres, the most part of which was sold in 1605 to Thomas Adkyns. In 1610, the remaining 7-acres, including the manor house itself was conveyed by Robert's son - with Robert's consent - to a cousin, Lawrence Makepeace.
